FEEDING MANAGEMENT

Supplementary feeding should start before the cultured stock reaches the “critical standing biomass” or before the pond reaches its “maximum carrying capacity”. This the point where the increase in nutrient requirement caused by the increased biomass can no longer be supported by natural food alone. This is why it is essential to introduce supplementary feeds to your ponds until satiation in order to maximize growth. Monitoring the animals’ feeding behavior is a must in order to prevent culture problems such as overfeeding, which can potentially lead to poor feed efficiency, increased costs, feed waste, and poor water quality conditions.

Recognize that the cultured species will eat to meet their energy requirements, which are usually weather and temperature influenced. In hot climates and bad weather conditions, feed should significantly be reduced to avoid “false feeding” especially in extremely hot conditions. Increased feeding should be done within the feeding guide range considering the various culture parameters in order to allow optimum culture levels.
